The Kaltenberg is 2896 metres high and forms part of what is known as the Verwallgruppe (Gruppe; german word for group) that lies southwest of Arlberg just on the boundary between Vorarlberg and Tyrol. In winter it is easily accessible with touring skis from the mountain station Sonnleitenlift am Albonagrat. As you only have to ascend 1040 meters to enjoy a descent of 2170 meters, it has become a very popular mountain for touring skiers.

Beschreibung:
From the mountain station Sonnleitenlift am Albonagrat you go over a flat plateau in direction of the Maroikopf. It takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to reach the Maroikopf summit. From here you already enjoy the first downhill run over the wide and not too steep slopes of the Kaltenberg. In the last part of the descent keep close to the right until you reach the bottom of the valley (hinteres Maroital). Here it’s time to put on the skins.
Start going upwards to the left side over a short slope. Always keep the Kaltenberg in sight while you enter the valley. Go in towards the Kaltenberg crossing over a steep scarp until you reach a flat terrain. Now continue to the right over terraced ground to the Kaltenbergsee (See; German word for lake) then over the steep Kaltenberggletscher (Gletscher; German word for glacier) until you get to the ski storage, placed on the right side below the summit. You can reach the summit by easily climbing up to it. Its south face is somewhat exposed.
Abfahrt:
Ski down the Kaltenberg until you reach a prominent tower where you turn left and cross some steep terrain on the left side. Always keep to the left while you get across rocky terrain until you reach the vast western slopes of the Bettlerkars (see the picture above).
